There are times when I paint for the sake of painting. I just grab a reference image, grab my brushes, my paints, a piece of paper and I start to work. I made this group portrait painting on one of those days.
The image is inspired by a vintage school photo I found on my collection. I took it out and I started to paint, but this time I focused not on copying the faces and expressions of each child, I let watercolor dictate what it wanted to do with each.
The ending result is a beautiful image where shapes and a limited color palette blend to create an image with a feeling of old time, a little eerie since they are long gone today, I wanted to show you a window to a past time we can barely understand, one that we now know only from the fragments of life records left behind by the ones now long gone.
