THE EMBRACE OF THE MIDNIGHT CAT

Halloween is, without a doubt, the absolute best season of the year. There is a deep, cozy magic that fills my heart when autumn settles in: the scent of woodsmoke drifting on the crisp breeze, the warm glow of jack-o'-lanterns against dark porches, and the feeling that friendly spirits and mysterious creatures walk right beside us.

When I was making "THE EMBRACE OF THE MIDNIGHT CAT" in my studio, I wanted to capture the tender, unspoken bond between a witch and her beloved cat. In so much ancient folklore, the black cat is an essential companion: a silent guardian, a playful secret-keeper, and an anchor to the unseen worlds. Standing in a tall, pointed hood that melts into her gown, she holds her black cat safely in both hands close against her chest, sharing a quiet moment of trust, magic, and companionship.

This piece is 100% handmade and hand-sculpted by me, Idania Salcido, the artist behind Danita Art. I pinched, built, and carved every silhouette from rich earthen stoneware clay in my studio, firing it in my old-school electric kiln.

The entire sculpture is finished in an organic, glossy midnight-black glaze dotted with warm speckled clay breaks that look like a constellation of stars glowing through night mist. A circular, unglazed moon-like feature rests on her face, lending her an ethereal, ancient presence. Her sculptural arms curve into a protective circle around the little cat, whose pointed ears and sweet paws snuggle peacefully into her embrace.
