THE WITCH’S APPRENTICE

Halloween is, without a doubt, the absolute best season of the year. There is a cozy, enchanting magic in the autumn air that I look forward to all year long: the rustle of fallen leaves, the glow of candlelight, and all the whimsical, friendly spirits that come out to play.

When I was making "The Witch’s Apprentice" in my studio, I was thinking about the sweetest little Halloween ritual imaginable: brewing potions in the dead of night with your best friend by your side.

Every great witch needs a familiar, and this mischievous little black cat is always right where the action is. Instead of letting her brew in peace, the cat hops right into the cauldron, pops out to peek over the rim, and purrs softly against her cheek to share in the magic.

This piece is 100% handmade and hand-sculpted by me, Idania Salcido, the artist behind Danita Art. I built every element from raw, rich clay in my studio and fired the entire set in my old-school electric kiln.

The sculpture rests on an earthen ceramic hearth base featuring two main hand-built forms: a sweet witch bust wearing her tall pointed hat, painted with rosy cheeks and a polka-dotted dress, and a rustic handled cauldron glazed in deep, glossy midnight black. Best of all, the little black cat familiar is an independent, sculpted miniature figure. You can place the cat peeking out from inside the cauldron, set him on his paws beside the brew, or tuck him close against the witch's shoulder.
